Leaves, twigs, and bark: The Ironwood has simple entire leaves that are spear head shaped. These leaves can be 5-12 cm long as well as 2-5 cm wide. The leaves are pinnately veined which are angled toward the tip of the leaf. Ironwood leaves are slightly toothed with a top lacking hair and the underside containing hair. Flowers: The ironwood has both male and female flower parts on each individual tree, this is known as being monoecious. The male flowers are tightly packed rod like structures measuring up to 5 cm. The female flowers are paper like clusters that contain seeds in each portion of the cluster. Fruits: Ironwood trees produce fruits, which are extremely light, flat nuts contained in the female's flower. |
